These are some of the happy surprises that people will encounter when they come to visit this amazing church of Saint-Christophe de Racour, a village located on the Hesbaye plateau, not far from Landen. In the centre of the town, one cannot fail to notice the imposing square tower of the building (33 m), which was obviously used as a defensive tower. It dates back to the 14th century and has 3 levels. It is possible to ascend by a spiral staircase into the tower which has preserved its observation posts and loopholes.
Second surprise: when you enter the porch, you discover a giant statue of Saint Christopher, 2.95m high, dating from the 14th century. It is said to be the oldest wooden statue of Saint Christopher carrying the baby Jesus in Europe. It is made of polychrome wood and depicts the saint in a hieratic and majestic attitude, as if lost in thought and carrying a smiling child.
As soon as you enter the church, you will notice (third surprise) a second statue of Saint Christopher, on the right under the rood screen. This one is much smaller, dates from the 18th century and this time, in contrast to the first, presents a saint in motion, as if he were rowing on the waves, his attentive gaze turned towards the child he is carrying. It is interesting to compare the two statues in this way.
The neat interior of the church, essentially Gothic, made of stone and Gobertange plaster, gives a pleasant impression. Also noteworthy are the baptismal font (15th century), the stained-glass windows in the choir (1956) and some small wooden statues of saints.
