Because nature is constantly in motion, a creek does not remain a creek forever. The creeks originated here about 500 years ago, when man could protect himself even less than today against the violence of nature. If there were any dikes, they were flooded and swept away by the swirling seawater. Where nature can freely take its course, creeks gradually disappear: dying plant material accumulates and forms an ever thicker layer. As a result, the creek gradually becomes less deep and low peat is formed. In 1994, a large number of poplars that were once planted in the reed beds were felled because their falling leaves acidified the water and accelerated the process of landfall.
