Deftinge first appears in historical documents in 1050, then as Dauatinge, probably originally a Celtic word referring to the presence of water. As you will notice, there are indeed several waters in the undulating landscape. The oldest part of the St. Ursmarus church (the choir) dates back to the 13th century, the west tower was built in the 17th century, but most of the church, the nave and the transept, was built in the 18th century.
