In 1949, the Pax Gate was built with the rubble of the first Yser Tower, which dated from 1929 and was largely destroyed in a bomb attack in 1946. That bombing was the work of unknown people. Between the remains of the old Yser Tower, a cross was erected as a tribute to the war heroes. The new Yser Tower was designed by Robert Van Averbeke, is 84 metres high and was completed in 1964. Over the years, the Yser Tower has become a symbol of peace and Flemish emancipation.
