Between Neerijse and Sint-Joris-Weert lies the Doode Bemde nature reserve on both sides of the Dijle. The name 'doode' refers to 'death for agriculture' and a 'meadow' is a moist grassland. Important here are the bowl soils, soils that are lower than the water level of the Dijle. They were already drained for agriculture in the Middle Ages. Since the Second World War, however, agriculture has declined here: the drier soils became grasslands, the wetter ones are now often overgrown with reeds. The Doode Bemde is today an area with a very rich vegetation: dotter grasslands, trouser forests, poplar plantations, reed beds and areas with sedges. Many interesting birds breed here, such as the kingfisher and the bluethroat. Even godwits can be noticed here.
