The cocoa tree (Theobroma cacao) originates from South America. The Aztecs made a decoction of the bitter seeds, flavored with vanilla and pili-pili. The Spanish conqueror Cortez brought seeds to Europe in 1528 from where cocoa cultivation also reached Asia and Africa through the botanical gardens in the 17-19th century. The excellent reputation of Belgian chocolate is due to the strict manufacturing rules such as the use of 100% cocoa butter.
