Hekelgem, The Old Mill

Description

The Old Mill is located at an altitude of 74 m on "Hoogboekhout" and dates from 1785. It was built by Jozef van Lierde on a site where there used to be a wooden mill. In 1943 this stone mill was protected as a monument and until 1950 it was used for grinding. In 1957-1958 it was restored by Dr. J. Cuvelier, and again in 1993 by the current owner Dirk Nevens. On the corner of the Molenberg and the Molenweg is a beautiful chapel, dedicated to Our Lady and built in 1887 by Petrus H. Joseph Roseleth, father of Henri, who was also mayor of Hekelgem at the time.
