The 1897 World Expo, organised as part of Belgium’s fiftieth anniversary celebrations, was spread over two sites: the Cinquantenaire Park and the royal estate of Tervueren. To link the two sites, King Leopold II had a road built, avenue de Tervueren, as well as a tram line connecting the city to the royal estate. The Woluwe depot, which was much smaller at the time, consisted of a single shed, a workshop, an administrative building and an electricity plant to power the line. As the tram network rapidly developed across Brussels at the turn of the century, the site was extended, tripling its storage area. At its peak, in the 1950s, the total surface area of the depot reached 12,000 m2 with a capacity of 285 vehicles. At the time, it served as the terminus of 14 lines that crossed the various districts of the capital. In 1976 two sheds were dismantled to gradually convert them into exhibition halls, marking the start of their second life as a museum. Classified as a historic monument by the Brussels-Capital Region in 2001, it is still partly used as a depot for lines 39 and 44.
