Schaarbeek (Schaerbeek) station is rather an impressive building these days. However, back in 1864, it was not much more than a wooden shed. It was not until 1887 that the architect Franz Seulen designed the left wing of the current station in stone.
The imposing right wing followed three decades later. The station became a train hub with a grand total of 13 platforms. Until 2000, this was where the overnight motor rail trains set off towards Southern Europe. Since the closure of the ticket offices in 2013 the station has simply become a stopping place. Even so, it retains its allure. Since 2015, Schaarbeek station has been the backdrop to the train museum Train World.
From here, you follow a few kilometres of the so-called Groene Wandeling (literally green walk), a walking and cycling trail of over 60 kilometres through many parks, woods and nature areas around Brussels.
