The memorial to the Brussels attacks in the Sonian Forest was built in response to the Brussels attacks on 22 March 2016. The Sonian Forest was chosen because this place radiates tranquility. The first bomb attack at Brussels Airport killed 12 people (excluding terrorists). About an hour later, an attack also took place in Maelbeek (metro station), killing 20 people (excluding terrorists). The monument in the Sonian Forest consists of 32 concrete blocks of 800 kilograms that together form a ring. These are arranged in such a way that they can be used as a sofa. Around these blocks are 32 birch trees that symbolize the 32 people who died. These trees were specifically chosen as they symbolize life.
