In the 19th century, poverty and misery were an asset in Flanders. Medical encyclopedias themselves speak of ' la maladie des Flandres' which was linked to the poor living conditions and resulted in anemia. At that time, a third of the Flemish recruits were rejected for military service because they were too weak to take up arms.
