The old version of the Turnhout swimming pool is an architectural defect. Since its opening in 2005, it has never been open for more than three consecutive months. It was built on unstable ground and sinks into it. There is a risk of electrocution, the water turns milky white, swimmers become unwell from the chlorine fumes, the tub leaks. Immediately after the opening, someone with his hair got caught in a filter. In Turnhout it is whispered that the architect has hung himself in the pool cellar in shame. But that turns out to be an urban legend . This versei of the pool is permanently closed, and a new swimming pool was built on this site.
Charlotte Van den Broeck described it herself in her book: Waagstukken. In it, she has followed architects for whom the story is true: architects who have failed and for whom the mistake became so all-encompassing that life itself became a failure. They chose death.
