For centuries there was a tradition of beer brewers in Kontich. As early as the 16th century, brewers knew that the best water for their beer could be found near the centre of the village. The well-known Maes brewery was also founded in 1880 in Waarloos. The rich brewery history can still be found in part at brewery De Sleutel. The current building dates from the 18th and 19th centuries. Until the 1930s, the famous 'Seef' was brewed there, the light beer that you could often find in the vicinity of Kontich. The entire Sleutelstraat is a protected village view and takes you right back to the 19th century. The brewery was transformed into a private residence, but can be admired from the street.
