Old Kale Valley

Between the village centers of Merendree and Lievegem lies the Valley of the Old Cald: a patchwork of hay meadows and grazing meadows, old pollard willow rows, small field groves and numerous ditches. The lifeline of the area, the Oude Kale, was once one of the largest streams in the Meetjesland and for centuries formed a connection between the Poekebeek and the Durme. Most of the valley is currently in fairly intensive agricultural use, but it remains a scenic gem with here and there beautiful, flowery hay meadows and trouser forests. The collared redstart and the owl benefit from the numerous pollard willows. In winter, large concentrations of winter birds are found in the valley of the Old Cald. Groups of hundreds of crested ducks and wigeons are no exception, with the occasional spectacled diver, nun or large merganser in between.
