Grapes can thrive in the Hageland because the stone absorbs the heat of the sun and releases it in the evening. As a result, it remains pleasantly soft and the grapes can still ripen a bit. The complex soil of iron sandstone, loam, clay, marl and sand gives the wine its rich taste, which can vary from vineyard to vineyard.
In 2013, the non-profit organisation Steenen Muur received a graft of the oldest vine in the world from Maribor, Slovenia. You can see this on the wall of the presbytery. In 2018, for the first time, enough was harvested to make a volume of 15 liters of white wine.
