When on 31 July 1943 the train carrying Jews from the Dossin barracks in Mechelen on its way to the Auschwitz concentration camp slowed down, eight prisoners tried to escape. Four of them – a woman and three men – did not survive. The others were cared for by local residents and brought to safety by the resistance.
