In 1872, architect August Van Assche was commissioned by Ernest Solvyns to design a building in neo-Gothic style along the Kloosterstraat with the intention of establishing a home for the elderly. In 1876 the old adjoining presbytery was annexed and converted into a hospital for the sick elderly. The care of the elderly was provided by the monastic community of the Sisters of Our Lady of VII Sorrows. In 1971 the function of a nursing home for the elderly was taken over by the newly built Leiehome, on the other side of the street.
The Saint-Regina almshouse has been completely restored in its original style and houses the non-profit organisation. Rehabilitation centre as well as the non-profit organisation Service centre for the care of the disabled.
