The course for the World Road Championships in Moorslede (1950) met with a lot of criticism: too flat, not hard enough, a glorified local fair race! The Belgian team included top riders like Van Steenbergen, Schotte and Stan Ockers. The Belgians were in top form and were hoping to get a good night's rest. The cyclists managed to convince the local brass band to skip their Saturday night concert. The actual World Road Championships was a quick race with lots of break-aways. Briek Schotte and the Dutchman Theo Middelkamp managed to escape from the pack 15 km from the finish line. After a 10-km sprint Middelkamp had to let his fellow break-away rider go and ‘Iron Briek’ went on to become the world champion. There's also a memorial plaque for Briek Schotte, but this plaque isn't on the cyclenetwork.Use the button on the top right of your screen to go to the plaque and return with your gps. After that you can continue your route. Photo: Collection WieMu Roeselare.
