Deman nearly died much earlier. During World War I he was a spy. As a bike courier, he brought coded messages to the Allies in the Netherlands. The messages were hidden in his gold tooth. But after being caught by the Germans near the end of the war, he was sentenced to death. Just before his execution, however, he was freed by the English. Deman's work as a spy was rewarded with French military honours. After the war Deman started road cycling again, winning a number of races including Paris-Roubaix in 1920. Another famous rider that was also active in the resistance, was Gino Bartali. This grave isn't on the cyclenetwork.
