Description

With his cyclists, Van Wijnendaele reaped victories at one European and American race after the other. The Flandriens soon became a legend. Around 1900, ‘Flandrien’ was still a pejorative nickname that the French gave the Flemish seasonal workers in the mines and farms of northern France. Van Wijnendaele turned the pejorative nickname into a badge of honour. On the picture you see Cyriel Van Hauwaert on the track in New York in 1911. The Flandriens were even a craze in the US.
