At Gwalia Farm there was a main dressing station for a battalion that had a parallel evacuation route. The British troops named the farm next to the cemetery Gwalia Farm, after a place in Wales.
On 29 June 1917, the 143rd Field Ambulance moved into the farm. The camp was later extended into a much larger hospital complex - a corps dressing station - in preparation for the offensive that would be launched in July 1917. A special railway line was laid to facilitate the transport of the wounded and materials.
The well-known writer and doctor David Rorie was one of those who worked here. The farm next to the road is still the original farm.
