This is where Doctor Emile Dumon (1862-1948) lived during the war, a welcome guest in progressive circles. He was married to German Ida Schüler and during the occupation, he turned into the main man among the Bruges activists.
Thanks to his political role, Dr Dumon could travel unhindered. He abused that privilege to buy tram wagons full of goods, including potatoes, onions, fish, sugar and soap, in Sluis with a view to selling them on in Bruges at exorbitant prices. At home, he ran a tobacco shop, which also earned him a fortune.
In October 1918, Dumon fled to Germany. After the war, he was sentenced to death in absentia. His nickname was ‘zaktivist’.
