175 Germans and 30 Britons are buried there. The German graves are marked with a triangular shape at the top, while the British ones are slightly rounded.
When on 26 September 1915, 44 Germans were killed in a tram accident, they were the first to be buried at the church. The number of graves on the Deutscher Ehrenfriedhof increased as war progressed. From 1917, British soldiers were also buried there. The last one, a British airman, was buried there in 1919.
After the armistice, the British and Belgians maintained the cemetery. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge took over maintenance from 1925, and since January 1957, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission has been maintaining this place.
What is noteworthy is that the German graves were not moved to the large collective cemeteries. Unlike the Commonwealth War Graves, the grounds with German war graves were not acquired forever. Elsewhere, they were cleared and the remains were collected in four locations: Vladslo, Langemark, Hooglede and Menin.
