The Celts were peoples and tribes who spoke a Celtic language during the millennium BCE and the centuries after. So it is primarily a linguistic concept. A Celt was a speaker of a Celtic language.
Their ancestors spread from a core area in Central Europe both westward and eastward. Around the beginning of the era, Celtic tribes populated the British Isles, Gaul, the Iberian Peninsula and parts of Central Europe and the Balkans. The Celtic languages belong to the Indo-European language family.
Characteristic successive Celtic cultures are the Hallstatt culture, the La Tène period followed by the Gallo-Roman period and finally the period of the Celtic nations to the present day, as indicated on the map on the right. Celts traded with Romans.
