It was established to visually demarcate the territory of the annual market freedom, as it was done in the Netherlands (e.g. Schiedam, Vianen, Beverwijk, Leiden, Haarlem, Enkhuizen, Groningen and Deventer), in the north of Germany, England, Italy (Trieste) and Brittany. They are often mounted on a slight elevation or on a kind of substructure, which makes them more recognizable in the environment. This freedom of the market allowed for free trade instead of the normal strict artisanal regulations.
