Of all the traces of Braine-le-Château's past, the pillory is the most famous and well-known monument. Once a symbol of infamy, it has become the true emblematic monument of the village. Escaping destruction during the French revolutionary fury, it is one of the few to have kept its "lantern". It was erected in 1521 by Maximilian de Hornes de Gasbeck, chamberlain of Emperor Charles V. It is the symbol of the lord's omnipotence. In the centre of the lantern there used to be a small column to which, on market days, the guilty condemned to the penalty of public exhibition were attached. The little culprits were simply tied by a straitjacket at the bottom of the column and exposed to the jeers of the inhabitants.
