The Bossuit-Kortrijk canal that connected the Scheldt with the Lys was mined in 1858-60. Despite its importance for trade and industry (mainly intended for the transport of coal from the Borinage), it took more than 20 years before an agreement was reached to dig the canal. In 1855 the concession was applied for by Adan, Parent and Schaeken. Through the intervention of priest De Haerne, the government guaranteed the interest on the capital for 50 years.
