Description

The Louise-Marie tunnel or Spichtenberg tunnel has a length of 414 meters. The tunnel on the Oudenaarde-Ronse railway line was built in 1857-1861 from Ghent to Saint-Ghislain and made it possible to easily connect the Ronse valley with the Scheldt valley. The railway tunnel runs partly under the Spichtenberg (105 meters) and the Kafhoek, under a spur of the witness hill. During WWI, the Germans dynamited the tunnel during the withdrawal in 1918. In August 1944, the tunnel was also sabotaged by a tilted locomotive. He was only released by the English after the liberation. The tunnel served as a hiding place for the German Reich Marshal Hermann Göring and according to the daily register Adolf Hitler spent the night in the tunnel between 22 and 23 December 1940.
