On October 14, 1943, the message came that the Germans would come and collect the bells the next day. That was not unexpected. At the beginning of the war, the ecclesiastical authorities should have issued an inventory of all the bells. Only old bells from before 1730 or that were of historical interest were allowed to remain. Carillons were also spared. On the evening of 14 October, the people of Aarschot gathered in the church and the bells were rung for hours as a protest. It took the Germans seven days to dismantle the three largest bells. Only the small St. Michael's bell was allowed to be kept for the church services.
