After the first bombing raid on the railway installations on 7 May 1944 had been unsuccessful, the Allied bombers returned on 9 May. Three formations of 14 bombers each came towards the city. In barely four minutes, they would destroy the station district in a hell of fire and blood. The beguinage, which had been restored before the war in 1927, was badly hit. The southern row of houses was badly damaged, but was not demolished. It will take more than ten years before the houses were restored according to the plans of architect Edward Van Nieuwerburgh with great attention to variation in detail and became part of a unique project for elderly care.
