This is a remnant of the "Iron Wall", the KW line from Koningshooikt to Wavre, a defensive system with hundreds of bunkers and movable steel fences on rolls, the so-called "cointet elements". With this line of defence, hastily erected before the Second World War, Belgium wanted to resist a German invasion. There was also a branch of Wavre over Ninove against... the French. In this way, our country wanted to emphasize its neutrality. The Germans knew all too well of the existence of the KW line, which ultimately served no purpose. At the end of 1941 she was dismantled by order of the German occupying forces. Yet you can still find a lot of remnants today, especially the extremely strong bunkers defied time.
These steel gates, named after their inventor, the French colonel Cointet, were also called Belgian gates. They were 5 meters high and weighed 1,300 kg. The rollers at the bottom were ideal for many a farmer to "bulge" his field.
