The Kastermeersen (here on your right) are an offshoot of the Kalkense Meersen nature reserve (which we were in a few minutes ago). Dredging in the Scheldt unearthed the head of a Viking ship, a Roman-era house altar and 31 urns. The place name Kaster would refer to a Gallo-Roman settlement. It is also suspected that a Spanish fort was located here in the sixteenth century to cut off supply routes to Ghent. There is no doubt that, throughout history, people have walked here. Even if the landscape does not give visible traces.
