Here, in the hall of mirrors of the former Carthusian monastery on the Fratersplein in Ghent, at the time the home of Lieven Bauwens, a world-famous treaty was signed: The Treaty of Ghent. It was concluded between the United States of America and the United Kingdom on December 24, 1814, after the War of 1812. It shows how much prestige Lieven Bauwens had at that time. The Treaty of Ghent settled a military conflict between England and the U.S., over territories in Canada.
