Chapel of Saint Roch

Description

The chapel is dedicated to Saint Roch, usually depicted with a plague plague on his leg and a dog with a piece of bread next to him. Legend has it that on his return from a pilgrimage to Rome he was plagued with the plague, hid in a cave and was given a piece of dog bread every day.

This chapel is also used for the weekly services of the Orthodox parish, more specifically 'la paroise de la protection de la mère de dieu' (the parish for the protection of the Mother of God).

The Eastern Orthodox or Orthodox Catholic Church arose from a schism (split) between Constantinople and Rome as a result of cultural differences between the Eastern and Western world. It lasted from the ninth to the eleventh century.

Orthodox Catholics accept only the dogmatic decisions made by the first seven ecumenical councils (the seventh being the Nicaea in 787.

The Orthodox Church does not have a centralized structure but is organized by country. It consists of 15 smaller churches. Worldwide there is the spiritual leader Bartholomew (anno 2022).

The Orthodox Church has about 225 to 300 million believers worldwide.
