The Hoxenterschans is located in the valley of the Dommel. This redoubt is the oldest redoubt in the Kempen and can be dated to 1580. Its foundation is said to be related to the siege of Maastricht in 1579. This siege threw the wide world into turmoil.
In 1580 it was established by Adam van Randeroede, the lieutenant-drossaard of the ampt Pelt, that in Eksel 'a bolwerck gebauwen is, het welck niet en saude genoichsaem worden bewart met wacht ende andere nootsakelike bewaarissen een bolwerck gebauwen is, het welck niet en saude genoichsaem bewart met wacht ende ander nootsakelike bewaarissen ' .
This place was chosen because of its suitable location, near water and rather hidden. The redoubt had a square shape with a moat all around. The canal has a width of 15-25m. The entrance was on the west side. The ramp had a size of approximately 57a, which could possibly provide space for approximately 120 places (45m²/plaets).
A redoubt regulation dating back to 1629 has been preserved. The redoubt was plundered by the Lorraine troops in 1651. In 1779 the redoubt was sold to lawyer Cluyskens for 55 fl. To this day, the redoubt is privately owned and beautifully preserved.
