This plaque honors the seven fatalities in the crash of an American Waco CG-4A glider on September 19, 1944, ten days after Blankenberge was liberated.
The glider , identification number 42-79442, was part of a formation of four C-47A aircraft with gliders from the 101st Airborne Division en route to Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden.
This Waco's tow cable broke, causing the aircraft's wing to tip against a tow cable from another aircraft outside the formation. A wing of the glider broke off and crashed near the Scharebrug.
All seven occupants did not survive the crash. The remains were either repatriated to their homeland or interred at the American Ardennes Cemetery and Memorial in Neupré.
