Description

A stone pedestal with a bronze bust stands in two concentric basins.

The upper part of the base bears the inscription "To Benjamin Devigne 1827-1894, his grateful pupils", while the lower part is decorated with a series of sculptural tools in relief.
Four fish lie at his feet, throwing the water from the fountain into one or the other basin, depending on the size of the jet .

The fountain is located on the steep Way of the Cross, which is the starting point of the Notre-Dame de Foy pilgrimage route and one of the ancient access routes to Dinant. The path is marked with niches and statues of saints.

Benjamin Devigne was born in Dinant in 1827 and received a solid artistic and professional education from his father, Perpète Devigne, which he perfected in the studio of the sculptor Guillaume Geefs in Brussels. He settled in Dinant as a teacher of sculpture and drawing; he trained many good craftsmen.

The School of Fine Arts, of which he was director , was located on the rue En Rhée in the patriarchal home of master blacksmith Paul de Maibe, but the dilapidated building was demolished in 1884 when it belonged to Jules de Montpellier. d'Annevoie to be included in the new Frères complex.

He was the author of the plans for the restoration of the Patenier Fountain in 1887. He was a specialist in altars and pulpits. His masterpiece is the monumental pulpit of the Saint-Loup church in Namur . It is designed around the theme, "Let the little children come to me."

As a token of gratitude, the city of Dinant named a street in the Saint-Pierre district after him in 1911.
