Before cattle and horses could be brought into the stable or out onto the pasture, the herd had to be taken to a watering trough several times a day. This was hard and time-consuming work.
In towns too far from a river or pond , the animals had to quench their thirst using the existing troughs (which were supplied by the nearest spring ). There are 2 types of rectangular troughs. One has a double toilet; the overflow of the first tank feeds the second. These vessels probably also served as toilets . The others, the oldest tanks, only have a sink.
