Saint Joseph is the patron saint of Belgium and Canada. In Limburg he is often affectionately called "Sint Joep".
Joseph (called the carpenter) was the adoptive father of Jesus according to the Bible. He was engaged to Mary at the time of Jesus' birth , but had not yet had a relationship with her. Liberal Christians tend to assert that Joseph was the biological father of Jesus . It is not mentioned later, while Maria is. He may have already died when Jesus appeared . The last time it is mentioned in the Bible is when Jesus was 12 years old.
It is the pattern of:
- Couples, children, Christian families, youth, orphans, chastity, laborers, lumberjacks, carpenters, furniture makers, engineers, undertakers, educators, outcasts, travelers, dying and a blessed dying.
- in eye diseases and desperate cases.
- against temptations and housing shortages.
