Before it was possible to water the cattle and horses in the stable or in the pasture, it was necessary to lead the herd to a place to drink several times a day. This was an arduous and time-consuming job. In the villages that were too far from a river or pond, the animals had to quench their thirst at the drinking troughs provided (which were supplied by the nearest spring). There are 2 types of rectangular drinking troughs. One has a double pelvis; the overflow of the first basin supplies the second. These troughs were probably also used as washbasins. The others, the older ones, have only one pelvis.
