It was here that painter Frans Van Giel built a house, which he called 'De Kapmantel'. He lived there from 1930 until his death in 1975. The name already says something about his connection with the Kempen and with the Kempen customs and traditions. He was rightly called 'Painter of the Kempen', but he was also a gifted portrait painter. Frans Van Giel was originally from Oostmalle, but he preferred the farming village of Wechel because of the rural area that was even more present here. Large work on the back: Procession in Wechel.
