This wilderness reserve is one of the three reserves classified by UNESCO. In 2017, 270 ha of the Sonian Forest, i.e. 6% of its territory, were inscribed on the prestigious heritage list. In the Joseph Zwaenepoel reserve, the biomass reaches an average of 880 m3/ha, of which 17% is dead wood promoting biodiversity. These figures are close to those of the Slovenian rainforest. Specifically, 47 species of fungi, 257 species of lichens and mosses as well as an impressive number of beetles have been identified here, which find in large decaying trees on the ground living spaces that are suitable for them.
