The pilgrimage route is the traditional path followed by the residents of Dinant on their pilgrimage to Foy-Notre-Dame.
She leaves the city via the tough climb up the Montagne de la Croix and then crosses the plateau through the forest to the sanctuary. The path is interrupted by nine "potales" - chapels on stilts - built in honor of the Virgin.
The Church of Foy-Notre Dame is a once very popular place of pilgrimage . Its origins date back to 1609, when a woodcutter found a statue of Mary in a tree he was about to cut down. Numerous miracles were soon attributed to her, especially from 1616 onwards.
