Klein Scherpenheuvel owes its name to its striking resemblance to the baroque Basilica of Scherpenheuvel. Just like the basilica, the dome of the chapel is also dotted with stars.
The chapel dates from 1842 and was erected by the then curate Druyts, on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the parish.
There is a legend about its origin. One day, a merchant from Scherpenheuvel returned home in the evening. In a forest, he was attacked by robbers. The merchant attacked the robbers and even wounded two of them, but as more robbers jumped out of the bushes, he ran away. Near Wiekevorst his strength gave out and he prayed to God to save him. After he had prayed, suddenly all the robbers were gone. When the merchant got up, he saw a statue of the Virgin Mary hanging from an oak tree opposite, and beside that tree there was a large sand pit. The merchant then went to the priest in Wiekevorst, told him the whole story and later had the chapel built.
