This shelter is located on the Chemin Reickem in Spa.
This promenade was built by mayor Collin in 1827. It partly follows the old pilgrimage path , a path mentioned as early as 1520 that allowed pilgrims to travel south from Maastricht (towards Burgundy and then to Santiago de Compostela ).
Like all ancient trails, it ran along the ridge and avoided the valley floor, which must have been impassable at the time. This walk was called "Chemin de Diane" . The employed workers were poorly paid, but were nevertheless obliged to work because unemployment was high. They called it "Reickhem", a begging place in Limburg . "Going to Reickhem" was synonymous with falling into misery. The name stuck.
