The 'mine cathedral' as it is called, was built after the Eisden coal mine was built and put into production in 1923.
Due to the increasing employment, the population increased sharply and the need for a new church arose. The Brussels architect Auguste Vanden Nieuwenborg designed a monumental church in the Brick Expressionism style, with Gothic elements such as pointed arch windows. The stained glass windows in the chancel are inspired by those of Chartres Cathedral . The church, with a plump tower of 53 meters high , was built from 1934-1936.
The church furniture is almost entirely from after 1945, but the organ dates from 1939 and was built by the Delmotte studio from Tournai . The Stations of the Cross are made of black marble in bas-relief and in 1960 several more sculptures were created by the hand of sculptor Mailleux. The Saint Barbara in the facade is from 1982.
