The tower of St Michaels Church was intended to be 138 metres high, but was never completed. Officially it was a question of safety, but in fact
the plans were those of a megalomaniac and the purse could not keep up. Along the waterside behind the church extends Het Pand. This former Dominican friary and hospital is now the property of Ghent University and is used as a cultural and congress centre.
