"Pythalor Cursoriam Murus" - Huy

Description

At the foot of the Mur de Huy, a monumental bicycle symbolizes the bond between the city and cycling.

The Mur de Huy, which was introduced in 1985 as the final of the competition , has become inextricably linked to it.

A sculpture now symbolizes this bond between the city and cycling. It is made of corten steel, which looks rusty, and is located at the foot of the Mur de Huy. The work is 4.4 meters long, 2.5 meters high and 3 tons heavy (including base). The creator, sculptor Hennuyer Michelangelo Circo , gave it the name "Pythalor Cursoriam Murus".

There are actually nine symbols in this work, explains the artist who wants to be educational for young people. There is a reference to Pythagoras and his right triangle theorem in the middle; the golden ratio via the mathematical relationship Phi that I introduced between each circle; the triangle facing the Wall serves as an arrow; the word “cursoriam” refers to the bicycle in Latin; “murus” reminds us of the Wall and we can guess the letter M between the two wheels; the circles of the rear wheel illustrate the three ascents of the Wall during the Flèche Wallonne; that of the front wheel, Merckx's three victories in the Flèche, even if it did not end at the top of the wall at the time. The base reflected the Chemin des Chapelles. And finally the work was placed at the zero line of the peak time of the wall ascent.'
