Housed in a former mansion in old Namur, in a pedestrian area, the museum presents the life and work of Félicien Rops from his beginnings as a caricaturist to his satanic and sulphurous works.
Félicien Rops, born in 1833 and died in 1898, traveled through the 19th century, a century disrupted by industrial progress , changing morals and modernity, which would give rise to symbolism in art.
The permanent exhibition offers a comprehensive approach to the diversity of Rops' work: his beginnings in social satire and caricature, lithography, the Baudelairean spirit, Parisian life, the ubiquity of women, death, eroticism, ties to the literary world , travel, etc.
The museum wants to be the place where this extraordinary temperament is expressed and devotes almost 700 m² to the artist's paintings, drawings, lithographs and letters.
In addition to the permanent collection dedicated to Félicien Rops, the museum presents temporary exhibitions several times a year on diverse themes such as the 19th century and its artists, ancient or contemporary graphic art, as well as certain aspects of Rops' work or life.
