Together with Lourdes and Rome , the domaine martial in Sugny has the “Scala Sancta” , a sacred staircase.
The Sacred Stairs are traditionally identified with the stairs in Pontius Pilate's palace, which Christ is said to have climbed.
Its construction in 1925 was under papal authority and the faithful climb the stairs on their knees as a sign of penance.
According to tradition, the original staircase was part of Pontius Pilate's praetorium in Jerusalem. So Jesus would have walked over it in his passion. According to medieval legends, the staircase was brought from Jerusalem to Rome by Saint Helena, the mother of Constantine the Great, around 326 . It is located in the complex of the ancient Lateran Palace opposite the Basilica of St. John Lateran.
